The database holds the device identifier (UDI-DI) and descriptive attributes for each device, such as the labeler, brand, version or model, and packaging. It does not hold production identifiers like lot or serial number. Labelers are responsible for submitting their records and keeping them current, and the public record can be used alongside the label to check that the data matches.
Why it matters for labeling
The GUDID record is a second copy of key label data, and it is public. If the device identifier, brand name, model or packaging details on the label differ from the GUDID record, the mismatch can be seen by regulators, customers and anyone checking. A new packaging configuration means a new device identifier and a new or updated record.
Common mistakes
- Label updated without updating the GUDID record, or the reverse
- A new package configuration reusing an old device identifier
- Version or model information that differs between label and record
- Assuming a GUDID submission also covers EUDAMED
